Jamaican Ladies, No. 7 and No. 8

Bill's Jamaican Lady No. 7 is carved from white alabaster and features a black soapstone base; No. 8 is carved from Colorado alabaster and also has a soapstone base. While carving on a monumental sculpture in Negril, Jamaica, Bill became intrigued with the high cheekbones, strong jawlines and intrinsic beauty of the Jamaican women. He began carving a series of 30 busts of from white marble, translucent alabaster and black soapstone.

In addition to the busts, Bill carved a full figure soapstone fountain in which a Jamaican woman holds over her head a bowl from which flows a figure-encasing veil of water.

One of the first busts in the series was stolen from an exhibition. "At first, I was terribly angry that someone would steal a piece of sculpture I had worked on for hundreds of hours." Bill recalls. " Then I realized that if someone liked it enough to risk going to jail for stealing it, I should take that as a compliment."

The Eyes of the Dragon

The Eyes of the Dragon resulted from Bill Culverhouse's love for the child's story, EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT A DRAGON LOOKS LIKE. Bill's dragon is made from aluminum and bronze and features soapstone eyes.

The Eyes of the Dragon was bought at one time by a man who later went to the Carribbean to live on his own sailboat. The owner left the dragon behind with his father. When the son had not returned after several years, his father asked him on the phone what he wanted to do with the dragon. The son replied, "Give it back to Bill so that he can sell it again. I'm never coming back to live on dry land again."

So the Eyes of the Dragon now resides in Charlottesville and is looking for a new home. But beware: if you become its owner, you too may begin to live your wildest dreams.
